on Mar 03, 2020, Updated Feb 09, 2024 Homemade bagels are so delicious right out of the oven. In March we love all things green so we made these green bagels for St. Patrick’s Day! Grab the recipe and enjoy! Top o the mornin to ya! These green bagels are such a fun way to enjoy a tasty St. Patrick’s Day or Christmas breakfast and they are super easy to make. We made green pancakes for the kids a while back, but I’m more of a savory breakfast person so I decided to try making green bagels. I had already learned how to make bagels before so all I had to do was go green. I love how they turned out!
Ingredients for Green Bagels
You will need salt, bread flour, sugar, water, and instant dry yeast. For the green food coloring, you have a couple different options. If you want a lighter color with a marbled look, add some gel food coloring to your dough at the end of the mixing cycle. Or, for a brighter and more even color, add regular food coloring to the water before mixing it in with the dry ingredients. You can see the difference in the photo below.
How to Make Green Bagels
Gather your dry ingredients and pulse together using a food processor or mixer with a bread hook. Once combined, add the water (with green coloring for even color) and mix until it forms a ball. Spray a bowl with oil and allow dough to rise, covered, for about an hour. The dough should roughly double in size. Press onto a floured surface and divide into equal parts. I make eight using this recipe. Roll each section out and use your hand to create a loop and stick ends together.
Boil bagels in water with added sugar for about 30 seconds on each side and place on a baking sheet. If you want to add toppings, beat an egg in a small bowl and dip the tops of your bagels first in the egg, then your toppings. Our favorites are everything bagel seasoning and cinnamon sugar. Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 10 minutes on each side. They will brown a bit on the outside but that beautiful green color is still shining through.
Can You Freeze Bagels?
Whether purchasing fresh bagels or making them at home, I always freeze them! They stay fresh for a long time and all you need to do is wrap them in a damp paper towel and microwave for about 30 seconds when you are ready to eat. I recommend storing flavored bagels in their own freezer bags to keep flavors separate. Eat plain or with your favorite cream cheese. For More St. Patrick’s Day treats, check out these posts:
