Why I Love Homemade Fried Donut Holes
This recipe is easy and delicious, not to mention the ultimate comfort food. But what I really love is how satisfying a cinnamon and sugar donut tastes when served warm. Next level amazing! So let’s get to it.
Ingredients Needed
This is a simple recipe made with basic ingredients. You may even have them already.
What to Buy
Next time you go to the store, make sure to get the following items:
Vegetable oil – Used for frying the donuts. Make sure you have enough hot oil to allow them to float and turn easily. Refrigerated biscuits – You can use your favorite brand of plain biscuits. This donut recipe uses buttermilk biscuits. Unsalted butter – We will use this to coat the cooked donuts before rolling in the topping. Granulated sugar – For added flavor, sweetness and texture. Ground cinnamon – The perfect topping for warm, fall comfort food.
How to Make Fried Cinnamon Sugar Donuts
To get started, separate the portions of biscuit dough and cut each biscuit into quarters. Roll the dough pieces into balls between your palms, taking care not to smash them. Set the dough balls aside on parchment paper or foil. Heat vegetable oil in a pot or fryer over medium to medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F as measured with a candy thermometer or frying thermometer.
Carefully lower a few dough balls into the oil to fry. If you see them bubbling, you will know the oil is hot enough. Cook for 1-2 minutes or until the underside of the donut holes are golden brown and they start to naturally turn over. You can use a fork or pair of tongs to gently help flip the donut holes over, and repeat cooking 1-2 minutes on the opposite side until the whole donut is completely golden brown all over. Carefully remove the donut holes from the frying oil with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel-lined plate. Repeat frying 4-8 donut holes at a time until all donuts are cooked. Do not overcrowd the pan or they may not cook evenly. After the donut holes are all fried, melt butter in a heat-safe bowl in the microwave. Then, in a separate bowl, combine the cinnamon sugar mix for the perfect donut topping. One by one, dip the donut holes into the butter, then into the cinnamon sugar mixture, making sure to coat on all sides. Place donuts on a plate to cool and serve. Serve with hot fudge sauce for dipping if desired and enjoy! Or you can make a few batches and create this adorable donut hole Christmas tree for the holidays!
